A highway stop transformed: Our riverside surprise at Le Clé de Saône

Essential highlights: what we valued most

  • An ideal campsite for a stopover on the route south: Located just 5 minutes from the A6 highway (Exit 29, Mâcon Sud), it serves as an exceptionally practical rest stop that cut down our travel stress. Even arriving late at 10:30 PM, the welcome was warm.
  • An unexpected natural setting right on the banks of the Saône.
  • A perfect starting point for family activities: The location offers direct access to a variety of recreation. It is also just 10 minutes from the panoramic Roche de Solutré hike and sits right next to the Voie Bleue cycling path.
  • A well-maintained campsite looking toward the future, with an attentive team: The entire grounds are kept remarkably clean, and the staff, like Marie at reception, are incredibly helpful.

A warm welcome after a late highway exit and the morning riverside surprise

Our original plan was simple: a quick, one-night stopover on our route down to the south of France. Because of our travel schedule, we arrived very late in the evening, around 10:30 PM. Despite the late hour, the welcome we received at reception was incredibly warm and hospitable. We chose this specific campsite primarily for its strategic logistics; it is located just 5 minutes away from the Mâcon Sud exit (Exit 29) on the A6 highway, making it an exceptionally practical stop. To add to its appeal, the pricing was highly attractive, costing us less than €20 for the night at the time of our stay.

Arriving in the pitch black meant we had seen absolutely nothing of our surroundings the night before. The real surprise came when we woke up the next morning to find ourselves right on the riverbank, with the Saône flowing directly in front of us, dotted with a few moored boats and swans gliding past. The setting instantly shifted our mindset. While we were admiring the waterside view, our children quickly spotted the leisure park (base de loisirs) located right next to the campsite. From that exact moment, they were even more motivated than we were to extend our stop by an extra day just to fully enjoy it.

Slow mornings and a panoramic hike

Having planned nothing for lunch, we started our day gently on the restaurant terrace, enjoying a quiet breakfast right facing the river. Seeking activities, the campsite reception recommended a hike to the Roche de Solutré, located just a 10-minute drive away. The walk was perfectly adapted for our children, requiring about 40 minutes of hiking. Upon reaching the top, it rewarded us with a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view over the entire region and the surrounding vineyards. Upon returning to the campsite, we opted for a light, very reasonably priced salad on the terrace—the ideal way to recharge our batteries after the walk.

Leisure afternoon and future plans

After lunch, we fulfilled our promise to the kids and headed to the adjacent leisure park. They spent the afternoon playing in the water while we took the opportunity to rest peacefully in the shade. Returning to the campsite in the late afternoon, we simply unwound and started thinking about a return trip. We realized there is so much more we want to do, such as fishing in the Saône, exploring the Voie Bleue cycling path that runs right alongside the campsite, and trying the waterski cableway (téléski nautique) once the children are a bit older.

Why we’ll be back: A quick stop turned pleasant surprise

Throughout our stay, we found the entire campsite to be very well-maintained. The sanitary facilities are currently a bit dated; however, during a conversation with Marie at reception, we learned that they will be entirely renovated and brand new in 2026. This clearly demonstrates a real commitment to improvement and investing in the site's future. What was meant to be a simple, functional highway stop transformed into a thoroughly pleasant surprise. Next year, on our route south, we will absolutely make the exact same stop—but this time, we will take the time to stay for a few extra days.
